  9.           ppmdist - simplistic grayscale assignment for machine

  13.           ppmdist [-intensity|-frequency] [ppmfile]

  15.      DESCRIPTION
  16.           Reads a portable pixmap as input, performs a simplistic
  17.           grayscale assignment intended for use with grayscale or
  18.           bitmap printers.
  19.  
  20.           Often conversion from ppm to pgm will yield an image with
  21.           contrast too low for good printer output.  The program
  22.           maximizes contrast between the gray levels output.
  23.  
  24.           A ppm input of n colors is read, and a pgm of n gray levels
  25.           is written.  The gray levels take on the values 0..n-1,
  26.           while maxval takes on n-1.
  27.  
  28.           The mapping from color to stepped grayscale can be performed
  29.           in order of input pixel intensity, or input pixel frequency
  30.           (number of repetitions).

  32.      OPTIONS
  33.           Helpful only for images with a very small number of colors.
  34.           Perhaps should have been an option to ppmtopgm(1).
